Each year, Fortune magazinecompiles the top 500 U.S. companies based on revenue. Businesses in Tennessee definitely had a presence on the list in 2013, with a total of nine companies making the cut. This is good news for all Tennesseans, but this news is especially valuable for business professionals.

According to Fortune‘s rankings and criteria, here are the top 10 businesses in Tennessee:

FedEx (#63)

The FedEx Corporation provides customers and businesses worldwide with a wide variety of transportation, e-commerce and business services. Their annual revenue is around $43 billion. FedEx offers integrated business services by operating companies that compete collectively while being managed collaboratively under the FedEx brand. FedEx employs over 300,000 team members and is based in Memphis.

HCA Holdings (#82)

HCA is the nation’s leading provider of healthcare services, with about 165 hospitals and 115 surgery centers in 20 states and England. It employs approximately 204,000 people. They are committed to the care and improvement of human life and strive to deliver high quality, cost effective healthcare in the communities they serve. HCA is based in Nashville and has annual revenue of around $37 billion.

International Paper (#107)

This company is a global leader in packaging, paper and fluff pulp. International Paper has manufacturing operations in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia and North Africa. Their businesses include industrial and consumer packaging, fluff pulp and uncoated paper. Headquartered in Memphis, International Paper employs around 70,000 people worldwide and is located in more than 24 countries to better serve customers around the globe. The annual revenue of International Paper is about $28 billion.

Dollar General (#175)

Dollar General is based in Goodlettsville and is the nation’s largest small-box discount retailer. They offer a carefully edited assortment of the most popular brands at low prices in small, convenient locations. Dollar General is among the largest retailers of popular American brands such as Procter & Gamble, Kimberly Clark, Unilever, Kellogg’s, General Mills and Nabisco. Their annual revenue is about $16 billion.

Community Health Systems (#184)

CHS is one of the largest hospital organizations in the U.S., and their hospitals have made significant investments in healthcare services, physician recruitment, facility improvements, modern medical technology and clinical excellence. Over the past decade, numerous individual and community hospitals have joined the CHS organization. They have 206 affiliated hospitals in 29 states, and employ 135,000 employees. CHS is headquartered in Franklin and has annual revenue of about $15 billion.

Unum Group (#257)

They offer a wide variety of benefits solutions, including education, enrollment services and valuable claim support. Unum is based in Chattanooga and has an annual revenue of about $11 billion.

AutoZone (#306)

AutoZone provides parts, prices and customer service in the automotive aftermarket industry. They are the leading retailer and a leading distributor of automotive replacement parts and accessories in the U.S. AutoZone has stores in 49 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Brazil. They are based in Memphis and have an annual revenue of about $9 billion.

Eastman Chemical (#324)

Eastman Chemical is a global specialty chemical company that produces a wide variety of advanced materials, additives and functional products, specialty chemical and fibers. It works with customers to deliver innovative products and solutions while maintaining a commitment to safety and sustainability. Eastman’s market-driven approach uses world-class technology platforms and leading positions in attractive end-markets such as transportation, building and construction and consumables. It serves customers in around 100 countries and employs around 14,000 people. Eastman is based in Kingsport and has an annual revenue of around $8 billion.

Vanguard Health Systems (#391)

Vanguard healthcare facilities are dedicated to providing rehabilitation and skilled-nursing for patients who are recovering from surgery, illness or injury. Their long-term facilities all exceed federal, state and company guidelines. Vanguard’s mission is to provide dignity in life for those they serve. The company is headquartered in Brentwood and has an annual revenue of about $7 billion.
