What is a Police Officer?
Law enforcement is designed to enforce laws that serve to protect the safety and well-being of individuals and their property. Duties for both police officers and detectives will vary depending on their region of service, position within the force and education level.
The role of a police officer
Police officers act as public servants by patrolling neighborhoods, investigating suspicious activities and enforcing laws that serve to protect the community. When they find someone breaking the law, it is up to the police officer to arrest, warn or cite them. Police officers will also respond to calls for service, including domestic issues. If they are called to the scene of a crime or accident, they will provide first aid to victims. Police officers play an important role in the judicial system, as the reports they create following an arrest are given in court to help solve cases.
The role of a detective
Detectives work behind the scenes, investigating crimes through collecting evidence, suspect and witness interviews; suspect surveillance; examination of records and more. In some situations, detectives will participate in an arrest and are often called to testify in court.
Career Outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the career outlook for law enforcement professionals is steady through the next decade. Job placement and responsibilities will vary according to your region and level of service as well as your education level. You may consider a career in local, state or federal forces.
The BLS reports a median annual salary of over $68,000 for detectives, whereas the median annual salary for police officers is just over $53,000.
