A network administrator takes on a variety of roles within their company. As IT professionals, they are in charge of maintaining an organization’s computer networks and maximizing those networks’ productivity. Because of the wide ranging necessity of technology, these professionals may work in a wide range of business segments and industries.

Roles and Responsibilities

Network administrators are responsible for a number of tasks. As professionals who oversee the day-to-day operations of computer networks, they are overall charged with installing, organizing, and supporting these systems. This may include local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) network segments, intranets, and other data communication systems. They may be required to determine organizational needs, installing hardware and software, making upgrades and network security, and optimizing network performance. They may also be required to train users in the correct use of these systems. Those who are in advanced positions may also manage and oversee other employees. Network administrators are most often employed by computer system design firms. However, they can also be found at employers that specialize in information services, educational services, finance and insurance, or company management.

Salary Details

Those who work as network administrators make a median annual salary of $81,100. However, individuals in the top ten percent of earners can make more than $130,200. Positions in this field are expected to grow six percent by 2026. Opportunities are particularly strong in investment firms and healthcare organizations.

Network administrators are usually required to obtain at least a bachelor’s degree. Individuals who want to enter this field should study a relevant area, such as computer or information science. However, computer or electrical engineering is also acceptable.
