How to be a Successful Online Student

It can be hard to know what to expect when you are going back to school. If it’s been a few years since you have completed coursework or taken tests, it is easy to feel intimidated by the idea of earning a degree online. In a field like information technology, however, an online format is ideal. You’ll be learning about computers on a computer, which is an invaluable opportunity. Still, we know that students want some insight into what it’s actually like to take classes at King University. That’s why we spoke with new information technology student Missy Gilliam, who is slated to graduate in the fall of 2015. She had a lot to say about the benefits of online coursework and how to be a successful online student. She chose to pursue an online IT degree so that she could benefit from an information technology salary and advance her career. Read on for more about her first impressions of the program, as well as some tips and tricks for other students like you.

What made you decide to enter the IT program at King University Online?

The program seemed to be paced properly and the opportunity to complete my work on my own schedule was appealing. The IT program itself appeals to me because it offers a skill set that is in demand in today’s market. I am also experienced with computers and interested in understanding them more.

What made you choose online courses over a traditional format?

I am a working professional with a family and my time with them is important to me. The online program allows me to continue to spend time with them and still work towards the completion of a bachelor’s degree.

What goals do you have after you graduate?

I would like to be promoted within the company that I currently work for but am also open to a new career. My goal is to increase my income so that I can continue to provide for my family and maintain the ability of my spouse and myself to homeschool our children. It is difficult for a family to flourish on one income in the United States today and hopefully by increasing my marketability we will have the option to continue having my spouse at home with my children teaching them and giving them a strong foundation.

What are some of the best features of the online program?

The mobility of the classes is a wonderful feature. The classes are posted ahead of time so you have the option to work ahead and set your own pace as long as you meet the deadlines that are established. Another part of the program I enjoy is the discussion board because I get to see what others think. I feel that some of those people may not share their opinions in a classroom setting as clearly or as confidently. The views that are expressed allow me to see other viewpoints and allow me the opportunity to understand concepts much more clearly and from different viewpoints.

Did you have any reservations about online classes before enrolling? Have King’s online courses alleviated those concerns?

I did have the concern that the online courses may be too fast paced and that I may not be able to absorb the content in such a short time frame. I have found that the information can be absorbed and understood if you plan ahead and complete the reading. The concern has been alleviated by the experience so far.

What advice do you have for someone going into the online IT program at King?

My advice would be to be proactive. Work ahead if you can and ask lots of questions. The people in your class can be full of information and most of them are willing to help or explain something to you. The professor is also a great source of information so don’t be afraid to ask them also.
