How Much Do You Know About the American Revolution?

The Revolutionary War lasted from 1775 to 1783, and was an armed conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and 13 of its former colonies, which had declared themselves the United States of America. What began as resistance against unfair taxation escalated to boycotts, revolts and finally full-fledged war. When the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, the sovereignty of the new American nation was recognized over a territory from Canada in the north, Florida to the south and the Mississippi River to the west.

Military History

The Revolutionary War was fought over the course of 25 battles. The Continental Congress appointed General George Washington as commander of the Continental Army and state militias in 1776. All told, the conflict lasted eight years, four months and 15 days.

The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution

The Declaration of Independence was a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. It announced that the 13 American colonies now regarded themselves as sovereign states — no longer part of the British Empire. The Constitution, supreme law of the United States, outlines the national frame of government that is still in use today, with just 27 amendments.

Founding Fathers and Key Figures

The term “Founding Fathers” refers to those who led the American Revolution against the United Kingdom of Britain. In particular, it applies to the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the framers of the Constitution. Many of these individuals went on to become presidents and other key figures in post-Revolution America.
